Renault creating performance version of the Twingo

2014 Twingo

2010 Twingo Gordini

Renault has confirmed that it is developing a performance-focused variant of the Twingo. That vehicle could be called the Gordini.

The Twingo Gordini will come with a turbocharged evolution of the 0.9-liter three-cylinder engine that is in the standard Twingo. The engine will produce over 120 horsepower to the rear wheels.

Other upgrades include bigger disc brakes and suspension upgrades like larger anti-roll bars and stiffer springs. Aesthetically, the Twingo Gordini will have an aggressive front fascia, model-specific alloy wheels wrapped by wide and twin exhaust pipes out back. On the inside there will be bucket seats and an extra set of gauges.

I believe this is the same speculation that predicted a Twingo RS in the other thread. I'm skeptical this is anything more special than a simple GT model. RS and Gordini are hallowed monikers at Renault that are not tossed around hully gully.

In a previous set of spy pics we referred to the hotter Twingo as wearing the "RS" moniker but upon further investigation we found out the company's design senior vice president Laurens van den Acker said a few months ago it's unlikely to happen. The main reason as to why it won't see the light of production day is because there isn't enough space inside the engine bay to squeeze a larger motor which would have to develop at least 150 bhp (112 kW) in order to be worthy of the RS designation, according to Renault Sport Tehnologies CEO Patrice Ratti.

If Renault builds a new Twingo Gordini, with some serious performance bits, then I'm sold.
Keisuke likes this.

With hot hatchs being a thing right now, I think it only makes sense for the Twingo to get a performance version. If people are buying Golf GTIs then I bet they will buy Twingo Gordinis.

Exactly, but ONLY with serious bits. I'll be thoroughly disappointed if Gordini is diluted like we've seen Nissan dilute NISMO.

First off a GTI and a Twingo are segments apart, so that link is ostensible at best! Second, we are all in agreement that we would like to see a performance variant, however not one of us wants to see the Gordini or RS moniker slapped on a vehicle of subpar quality to those two storied names.

Oh and hot hatches have always been a thing

From the perspective of Renault though, it makes sense for them to stick a well-known name on the performance model. Name recognition can go a long way.

Yeah it's all branding as far as the name goes, which matters most when they already built up a good reputation around that brand, since people already have good expectations of it.

It could backfire if the car sucks, but chances are it won't be that terrible. Even if its mediocre, the name recognition will keep things on the right track. It can't be as bad as the Fiat 500 Abrath.

whats bad about the Abrath 500? Its lived up to its "branding" quite well...

Gordini and RS are sacred names, you don't just half arse those... Does Mercedes treat AMG that way, does BMW treat M that way....
